Ear Cuffs: Silver, Carbon, Fit and How to Wear

A silver BLADE L weighs 3.8 g; the carbon version weighs 0.3 g. Neither needs a piercing, but the materials feel different and cannot be adjusted in the same way. The twelve STRUGA cuffs comprise eight models in uncoated 925 silver and four in pure carbon, without silver. Most silver models start light; BRUTALISM V.3 Dark Treatment M starts dark.

Alongside BRUTALISM and CARBON, the range includes BLADE, SIGNATURE ASYMMETRIC and THORN. Check the individual product page for its material, finish and details.

Silver models weigh 1.6–7.5 g and come in M or L according to the design. Carbon models are L, at 0.3 g. These letters describe models, not a universal ear size.

Silver can be adjusted slightly at the gap, off the ear, about half a millimetre at a time. Set the fit once. Do not bend carbon, and remove any cuff that presses or irritates.

A standalone cuff needs no piercing. An earring worn with it may still need one. Remove the cuff before sleep.

What Is an Ear Cuff

An ear cuff is an earring held around the edge of the ear without a piercing. The edge passes through the opening and rests inside the curve. A pierced earring instead uses a post or wire through a hole. You can wear the two together; each still needs its own fastening.

That opening is the first detail to look for. A small band, a broad wrap and a cuff joined by a chain to a pierced earring may all appear in the same search. Before choosing the silhouette, check how the whole piece goes on and which part, if any, needs a piercing.

Ear Cuff, Ear Wrap, Ear Climber — What Is What

Names help narrow the search, but the fastening tells you what you can wear.

An ear cuff is an open form around the edge of the ear. STRUGA makes this construction without a spring or screw.

An ear wrap covers more of the ear, sometimes in several turns. It can be worn without a piercing when the form holds around the ear on its own.

An ear climber runs upward from a pierced lobe. Unlike a standalone cuff, it needs that piercing.

Listings sometimes mix these names. Look at the complete construction: a chain leading from a cuff to a pierced earring changes what is required to wear the piece.

Ear Cuff vs Clip-On vs Pierced Earring

With the names clear, compare the fastenings. An open-band cuff, a clip-on and a pierced earring can have similar silhouettes while holding in different ways. The table shows what to check when trying each one.

Types of Ear Cuffs by Attachment

An open band passes onto the ear through a gap; a clamp uses a spring or screw. A wrap follows a longer stretch of the ear, while a chain can connect a cuff to another earring. If there is a chain, check whether the earring at the other end needs a piercing.

STRUGA cuffs are open bands. Their fitting method depends on the material: a silver gap can be adjusted slightly, while pure carbon is rigid and must not be bent. Similar outlines do not make the two materials interchangeable when fitting them.

Three Positions on the Ear

The upper edge of the ear is called the helix. It is a familiar position for an open-band cuff, especially with hair tucked behind the ear. The point where the edge of the ear passes through the gap may differ from where the cuff finally sits. Turn the cuff gently into position, without forcing it over a thicker area.

The conch is the inner bowl of the ear. A cuff intended for it needs a curve that suits that position; an outer-edge model will not necessarily work there. The lobe also has its own constructions, including pieces sold as cuffs that actually fasten like clip-ons.

Choose the position with the model, using its photograph and fitting instructions. Turn your head and move your hair as you normally would. A suitable cuff stays in place without pinching. If it slips or presses, take it off before deciding whether another position or model is needed.

Choosing a Size and Checking the Fit

M and L refer to sizes of particular designs. Neither letter describes a standard ear size. A strip of paper around the edge will not tell you the inside span of a rigid cuff either. Start with the model and its intended position, then use the ear cuff size guide; ask us before ordering if the fit is uncertain.

Compare weight separately from size. BLADE L and SIGNATURE ASYMMETRIC L each weigh 3.8 g in silver, against 0.3 g for the carbon versions. Even two M models differ: BRUTALISM V.1 weighs 2.61 g, while V.3 Dark Treatment weighs 1.6 g. These figures help compare the models, but cannot tell you how securely a cuff will fit.

Confirm the size when ordering, before making any adjustment. If the shape does not sit comfortably in its intended position, narrowing the gap further will not solve it. The next sections explain how to put the cuff on and, for silver, make a small adjustment off the ear.

How to Put On and Take Off an Ear Cuff

Hold the body of the cuff and position the gap against the edge of the ear. The edge should pass through the gap without force. Gently turn the cuff into the intended position. Do not bend or squeeze it while it is on the ear.

To take it off, support the body and reverse the movement. Turn the cuff until the edge of the ear can pass back through the opening, then lift it away. Do not pull down or force the gap wider. Follow the instructions for that model: another cuff may go on at a different point.

Check the fit with your usual glasses and hairstyle before going out. If either putting it on or removing it takes force, stop and ask us about the model and position rather than forcing the cuff over the ear.

Can You Bend an Ear Cuff to Fit

Silver STRUGA cuffs allow a small adjustment at the gap. Take the cuff off and use your thumb and forefinger, moving about half a millimetre at a time. Narrow the gap if the cuff is loose; widen it if it presses. Adjust only the gap, without deforming the rest of the cuff. Use your fingers, not pliers.

Set the fit once. Bending the same point back and forth every day can eventually crack silver. Ask before adjusting if you are unsure: an adjusted cuff is no longer eligible for exchange or return.

You can arrange to send a silver cuff to us for fitting; agree the details before sending it. Carbon cannot be fitted this way. Do not bend it by hand: contact us about the particular model and fit.

Can an Ear Cuff Damage Your Ear

A cuff should not hurt. Remove it if you feel pressure, pain or numbness, or notice irritation. Do not wait for your ear to get used to painful pressure.

Discomfort can involve fit, material or both. A loose cuff may move or catch; a tight one can press. Check the construction and your skin’s response separately, and ask about the model before attempting an adjustment.

Wear the cuff on intact skin and stop if symptoms appear. Persistent redness, swelling, broken skin or pain calls for medical advice. Moving the cuff or changing its material does not establish the cause.

Ear Cuffs with Glasses, Headphones and Sleep

Try the cuff with your glasses on. Their arm may share space with it behind the upper edge of the ear. Try another position only if the cuff is designed to sit there; if the two still press against one another, wear them separately.

Try headphones too. An over-ear cup can press the cuff into the skin, and smaller headphones can touch it as well. Remove the cuff if that happens. Tightening it to keep it in place under headphones increases the pressure.

Take the cuff off before sleep. A pillow can press it into the ear, and its position may change while you are asleep. A comfortable daytime fit does not tell you how it will feel against a pillow.

925 Silver and Sensitive Ears

The mark 925 means 925 parts silver per thousand. The FTC silver-content rules define that fineness claim. The number does not identify every other alloy component or promise compatibility with sensitive skin.

STRUGA’s silver cuffs are uncoated 925 silver. The four CARBON models are pure carbon, without silver. They are a separate material, rather than silver cuffs with a dark coating.

We do not describe the cuffs as hypoallergenic. If you know that you react to a material, ask about the chosen model before ordering. Stop wearing it if itching or redness appears. A mark under a cuff does not tell you whether its cause is residue, pressure or a skin reaction.

Why Silver Darkens, and How That Differs from Oxidising

Silver darkens mainly through reactions with sulphur-containing compounds. The Canadian Conservation Institute identifies silver sulphide as the main dark component of tarnish and notes that removing tarnish repeatedly also removes some underlying metal.

At STRUGA, Living Silver means an uncoated surface that changes with wear. Most silver cuffs start light. BRUTALISM V.3 Dark Treatment M is already darkened when made; this is its starting finish, rather than the colour of every silver model.

Carbon and dark silver may look similar in a photograph. Read the material description as well as looking at the colour: one is a rigid carbon form, the other a silver cuff with its own surface and a slightly adjustable gap.

Caring for an Ear Cuff

After wearing a cuff, wipe it with a soft dry cloth. Take it off before swimming and before applying cosmetics near the ear. Follow the care instructions for its material.

A silver polishing cloth is mildly abrasive. It can brighten the metal, including a surface deliberately darkened at the start, so use it only if that is the change you want. Do not put silver dips or metal polish on carbon. Ask us about renewing a silver surface if you are uncertain how to proceed.

Men's Ear Cuffs

STRUGA does not divide cuffs into men’s and women’s models. Start with the position on your ear, then compare the silhouette, weight and surface. A broad cuff can be worn without a piercing just as a narrow one can; its appearance does not tell you whether the fit will work.

For a broad silver cuff, compare BRUTALISM L with BLADE L. BRUTALISM L weighs about 7.5 g, BLADE L 3.8 g. BRUTALISM is a broad form, while BLADE is shaped like a link. If you want the cuff to arrive with a darkened silver surface, BRUTALISM V.3 Dark Treatment M weighs 1.6 g. That finish belongs to this particular model.

You can wear a cuff on either ear; STRUGA assigns no fixed meaning to the side. Try one piece or an asymmetric combination with your haircut, glasses and other jewellery. Choose the arrangement you want to wear rather than copying a product photograph exactly.

How to Wear and Stack

With hair tucked back, the upper edge of the ear and the cuff’s outline are easier to see. Loose hair can cover the form and reveal it as you move. Try both before deciding how much of the cuff you want visible.

One cuff creates a different arrangement from a matching pair. You can repeat the shape on both ears, or place a cuff on one and a stud on the other. Neither symmetry nor asymmetry is a rule.

For a stack, try the cuff with pierced earrings or other cuffs, checking that the pieces do not press against each other. A mono-earring from the same family offers another way to repeat a contour without wearing identical pieces on both ears.

An Ear Cuff as a Gift

A standalone cuff can be given to someone without a piercing. That removes one question, but not the need to consider fit and skin sensitivity.

Check the model and size before ordering. If the recipient cannot try it on, ask us what fitting information would help. An open band is not a universal size, and silver and carbon offer different possibilities for adjustment.

The models offer different outlines: BRUTALISM has mass and volume, BLADE a link-shaped contour, SIGNATURE ASYMMETRIC cut edges, and THORN a single sharp angle. Choose the form for the person rather than the occasion.

Where the Form Came From

The idea of holding an ornament around the ear predates the name “ear cuff”. The Shanghai Museum describes a slit stone ring from the Majiabang culture, about 7,000–6,000 years ago, worn by drawing the lobe through its opening. It is a documented comparison for a fastening without a piercing, not evidence of a direct line to today’s cuff.

US patent 1,344,556, filed in 1919 and issued in 1920, shows an ear-ornament fastening with a screw. It holds differently from an open band even though both avoid a piercing.

Neither example identifies one birthplace or first wearer for the whole category. For the cuff you choose now, look at the same practical details: the opening, the part supporting its weight and whether the material permits adjustment.

How to Order

Silver and carbon cuffs are made to order. The estimated production time is two to four weeks, often sooner. Confirm the model, size and delivery timing when ordering. If you need the cuff by a particular date, let us know when ordering: we will tell you straight away whether we can meet your deadline and give your order priority. We ship worldwide.

For an order in Bali, agree the delivery destination as well as the timing. Being on the island does not mean a particular cuff is ready to collect.

For a form outside the catalogue or a particular fit, use Custom Order. Work begins with your brief and a personal proposal. For Custom Order, the estimated production time is two to four weeks from approval of the sketch, often sooner.
