The Celuk passport

Balinese silver is 925 sterling worked by hand in a tradition that is more than a century old on the island. Its centre is Celuk, a village near Sukawati: silverwork here has been documented since 1915, when a master and his son, trained by the smiths of the Mengwi kingdom, began with temple vessels and passed the skill to their neighbours. By 1935 the craft had become the village's main trade; metal masters appear in Balinese inscriptions as early as 896 — pande mas, the goldsmiths of the courts.

How to tell the real thing: the composition of silver does not depend on geography — 925 is 925 everywhere. Bali's difference is in the tradition, not the metal: the pattern is set from silver grains the size of poppy seeds, one at a time, with tweezers; a real piece has weight, the unevenness of a hand, and a hallmark. • Geringsing cloth from Tenganan. Double ikat is the technique where both the warp and the weft are dyed to the pattern before a single thread is woven. Three countries in the world still hold it — India, Japan, Indonesia — and in Indonesia it is one village, Tenganan. A single cloth takes two to five years.
• Stone carving from Batubulan. The stone is paras, a soft volcanic tuff from the deposits of Mount Batur — soft enough to cut by hand, which is why the village carves and does not merely sell.
• Coffee from Kintamani. Plantations on the volcano's slopes. The ethical choice is a farm without cages: caged luwak is a roadside attraction, not coffee.
• Ceramics from Pejaten. A village of potters — tableware shaped by hand.
• Suling and genggong. The bamboo flute and the jaw harp are instruments, not souvenirs: they are played in the gamelan.

What you are not allowed to take out

Sea-turtle shell, coral pieces and nautilus shells are sold openly at tourist markets, and all three are barred from export. Marine turtles sit in CITES Appendix I — international trade is closed. Coral and nautilus sit in Appendix II: without a permit the export breaks the convention, and the piece is taken at the border. Silver, cloth, wood and coffee carry no such restriction.

How to tell a workshop from a reseller

At a market, bargaining starts at half the price named. In a workshop the price is fixed — that is the sign of a place that makes rather than resells. The second sign: a workshop shows you the work — the bench, the tools, a piece that is not finished yet.
