How oxidation is done at STRUGA

Our production path is this. First a concept becomes a finished object: the author makes a master model, a mold is taken from it, a wax copy is produced, the wax is built into a tree, and the tree is filled with 925 silver. After cooling and cutting off the sprues, each object goes to a jeweler for hand finishing. Seams are removed, the surface is brought to the texture needed — somewhere matte, somewhere polished, somewhere with a coarse brush.

At this stage the silver is light, new, without character. Next — oxidation. The piece is dipped into a liver of sulfur solution (potassium and sodium polysulfide) or hung over sulfur-bearing vapor. The silver darkens within tens of seconds. Depth is controlled: some objects need full blackness, others a light tone. When the shade is reached, the piece is rinsed in a neutralizing solution to stop the reaction.

Then the main part. Polishing by hand. The maker takes a cloth with a fine abrasive paste, thin brushes, sometimes a chamois wheel, and removes the blackness from the edges. Each Brutalism V.1 or Thorn Ring is finished separately. You cannot do this by program — the eye and hand choose where the ridge is, where the recess is. The finish is set with a light microcrystalline wax or just a wipe. No lacquer, no protective coating. The sulfide layer holds on its own — it is stable, thin (a few microns), and does not flake. Over the years it will change — somewhere deepening from sweat, somewhere wearing off from friction against fabric. That is expected.

Care: what NOT to do

The main mistake with oxidized silver is trying to "clean" it with products meant for ordinary silver. Most of those products work by removing the sulfide layer. For rhodium-plated or heavily tarnished untreated silver — fine. For oxidized silver — a disaster: you remove exactly the blackness for which the piece was made.

Baking soda. The most frequent advice online. Soda is alkaline, plus it works as a fine abrasive. It mechanically strips silver sulfide and leaves the metal light. If you wipe a Thorn or Brutalism piece with soda — the relief simply disappears. All recesses become as light as the raised parts. The only way back is re-oxidation in a workshop.

Toothpaste. Also abrasive, often containing alkali. Same effect — strips the blackness, evens the surface tone. Do not use.

Ultrasonic bath. Those small devices for cleaning glasses and jewelry. Ultrasound in water creates cavitation — micro-bubbles that mechanically tear dirt from the surface. They tear off the thin sulfide layer too, especially on the edges. After ultrasound, an oxidized piece comes out "scuffed": still black in places, already light in others, with no proper relief. Do not use.

Liquid silver cleaners in jars (immersion type). The most aggressive. They contain thiourea or similar reagents that quickly dissolve silver sulfide. After a five-second dip, nothing is left of the oxidation. Do not use.

Aluminum foil in hot baking soda. A folk method. The electrochemical reaction transfers sulfur from silver to aluminum. Removes the blackness completely. Do not use on oxidized silver.

Hydrogen peroxide, bleaches, toilet cleaners. We have seen advice like this. Do not use on any silver — this is not about oxidation, this is about preserving the metal.

The logic is simple: anything that cleans "tarnished" silver back to white removes the oxidation. If a piece has deliberate blackness, any "cleaning" is its erasure.

Care: what to do

Oxidized silver does not need cleaning in the usual sense. What it needs is hygiene and careful handling. That is all.

A soft cloth. Cotton or microfiber. Wipe the piece down after wearing it — take off sweat, skin oil, traces of perfume. For basic care that is enough. No pressure, no paste. Just run the cloth over the surface.

Warm water and neutral soap. If a piece has genuinely got dirty (cream on it, soap left in the recesses, grime after a trip) — a soft brush (a child's toothbrush will do), warm water, a drop of liquid soap with no fragrance and no acids. Rinse, scrub gently along the relief, rinse again with clean water, blot with a lint-free towel. Air does the rest.

Dry storage. Not in the bathroom, not on a windowsill by the sea, not in a bag together with something wet. The sulfide layer is stable, but on a thoroughly wet surface a further uncontrolled reaction can start underneath it — the piece begins to go green or shifts toward a copper patina. A chest of drawers or a small box in a dry place is the optimum.

Wear it more often. Counterintuitive, but true. Skin oil, the warmth of the hand, and light friction against fabric work as natural polishing. On rings worn every day a recognizable worn-in look appears within six months: the edges lighten from friction, the shadows stay in the recesses. That is the individual patina — what the dark finish is made for. Pieces kept in a box age worse: they dull evenly, without nuance.

Take it off for chemicals and sport. A chlorinated pool, sea water, scrubs, aggressive creams — that is not care, that is a chemical attack. It speeds up the darkening uncontrollably and can leave stains. Take pieces off before the pool, a workout, or a shower with harsh products. After the sea — rinse with fresh water and wipe dry.

Perfume and cosmetics before the jewelry, not after. A basic rule for any jewelry, and especially for oxidized pieces. Alcohols in perfume and acids in creams can leave marks on the sulfide layer — usually small, but visible in the recesses, where the substance sits. Skin first, then perfume and cream, and five to ten minutes later put on the rings and chains.

Where oxidized silver lives most vividly

Not every piece gains from a dark finish. A smooth, thin ring with no relief simply looks dirty once it is oxidized. But forms with texture and shadow come into their own.

Thorn. A family with spikes and uneven raised parts. The dark pockets between the spikes and the light tips give maximum contrast. Without oxidation the same form looks like a single-tone object. With oxidation it is relief that reads from a distance.

Brutalism. A rough surface, almost like concrete. The dark texture strengthens the concrete aesthetic. V.1 and V.3 are deliberately not polished to a mirror — we want the relief to read.

Blade. A line of straight links and elements where the dark joints create graphics. Blade Medium Links V.2 is about the long shadows between the links that underline every connection.

Chains and links in general. Any chain with textured links reads as more of a jewelry object once it is oxidized. The shadows in the joints read as a drawing.

Style: how to wear oxidized silver

Dark silver is not "gothic" in the everyday sense. It is a material that entered the contemporary men's and women's wardrobe as a neutral alternative to shiny gold, mass-market rhodium, and sterile steel. It has its own logic.

It works straightforwardly with dark clothing: a black t-shirt, a dark coat, a gray sweater — against that background oxidized silver reads as an object, not as "jewelry." It does not shine, does not distract, holds its form. If you want more contrast, take white fabric: on a white shirt a dark chain link or a Thorn bracelet works as a graphic element. On a marketplace listing you can find "oxidized 925 silver" for five hundred rubles. If something costs less than the metal it is supposedly made of, that is a signal that what is inside is not what is claimed outside. With dark silver there are several scenarios.

Scenario one: imitation. Brass or an alloy with a high copper content (below 925) is covered with a thin layer of silver, then painted black. The paint is ordinary — nitro or acrylic. Within a month of active wear it comes off the corners and the brass shows through. The piece loses its look at once.

Scenario two: a sprayed coating. Cheap silver (real 925, simply not oxidized) is covered with a dark blackening compound. The compound behaves like paint, not like chemistry. A brush takes it off in a couple of days.

  3. Traces of hand work. Slight differences between two examples of the same model (if the shop shows several photos) are a normal sign of hand polishing. If every object is identical down to the micron, it is a machine stamp, and the oxidation there is most likely not done by hand either.

Price is a signal too. 925 silver is not cheap in itself, and on top of the metal comes the work: the wax model, the casting, the polishing, the oxidation, the finishing. Can the oxidation be restored if it has worn off

Yes — and this is an advantage rhodium does not have.

If the blackness in the recesses of an oxidized ring or chain has worn away over time (which happens after several years of daily wear, or after contact with aggressive chemistry), the piece can be brought back to how it started. The process is simple: the jeweler degreases the surface, immerses it in liver of sulfur or a similar reagent, holds it until the tone is right, neutralizes the reaction, and polishes the raised parts. The same object can be oxidized again many times over — no silver is lost by it, the reaction always runs on the top few microns only.
