What Does a Black Wedding Ring Mean?

Black by Coating, or Black by Oxidation
Black rings get their colour two different ways, and the difference shows after a few years of wear.
Most black wedding bands sold today are tungsten carbide, titanium or ceramic carrying a vapour-deposited plating. The core underneath is grey. Daily friction thins the plating and the grey comes through, commonly inside one to two years, and the ring has to be re-plated to look black again.
Oxidation is not a layer. Blackened silver is the metal itself converted at the surface, so there is nothing to peel or chip away. It wears down into the recesses rather than off the ring.
