How is a proposal ring different from an engagement ring and a wedding ring?

A proposal ring and an engagement ring are the same object: it is given at the moment of the proposal and stays on the hand until the wedding. The wedding ring appears later, at the ceremony, and both partners wear one. The difference is not the metal or the price — it is who chooses, and when. The first ring is usually chosen by one person, often without the other knowing; the second is chosen together and tried on together.

That has a practical consequence. A proposal ring does not have to be the final decision of a lifetime. It has to be right in meaning and close enough in size — the rest can be settled by two people afterwards, including a second pair of rings for the wedding itself.

In the US and the UK both rings are worn on the left hand. In Russia and much of Eastern Europe the engagement ring sits on the right hand and moves to the middle finger after the wedding, leaving the ring finger to the wedding band. The full comparison is in Engagement Ring vs Wedding Ring.

How much does a silver proposal ring cost?

Straight answer: dark minimalist rings at STRUGA start at $96, and across all sizes the range is $96–$560. A fully custom ring is quoted separately — the price depends on the form, the stone and the amount of bench work, and it is named before the work starts, not after.

The price of a silver ring grows with the size, and that is weight rather than markup: silver is counted in grams. The Thorn Ring weighs 4.7 g at 16 mm inner diameter and 12.7 g at 22 mm — almost three times the metal in the same design. The same ring on a larger hand costs more, and the catalogue shows that difference openly.

For scale: in the 2026 Real Weddings Study by The Knot Worldwide (10,474 US couples married in 2025), 61% of engagement rings now carry a lab-grown centre stone, with an average spend of $4,600. A silver ring of simple form is a different order of spending and a different object: the meaning sits in the form and in how the ring was made, not in the weight of a stone.

Is silver acceptable for a proposal ring?

Yes — as long as you know how silver behaves. The number 925 is the share of metal in the alloy: 925 parts of silver per thousand, the remaining 75 copper, which gives the alloy its strength. Fineness is written that way across hallmarking systems — parts per thousand.

Then the honest limits. Silver is softer than gold and platinum: a ring worn every day picks up fine marks within a year. Light silver also darkens on its own, from air and skin — at STRUGA that is called living silver, and the darkening is age rather than damage. If you want the ring dark from day one, it is blackened at the bench instead.

What this means for a proposal: a silver ring holds up to daily wear but asks for simple care — take it off for the pool and for cleaning, wipe it with a cloth now and then. Anyone who wants a ring to look exactly as it did on the first day, with no care at all, should choose a harder metal.

What if you do not know the ring size?

You can start without it, and most people do. At STRUGA the size is the inner diameter of the ring in millimetres, from 15 to 22 mm — the catalogue states it directly, with no conversion between national systems, so nothing is lost in translation.

There are three ways to find the size without asking. Wrap a thin thread or a paper strip around the base of the finger and measure the length in millimetres. Put a ring that already fits that finger on a ruler and measure the inner diameter. Or photograph that ring next to a ruler or a coin and send the picture — we read the size from it. A custom ring is made to a size that is already known, so the earlier the number exists, the less risk there is. If the size is still uncertain on the day of the proposal, a catalogue ring in a close size is the safer path — the exact one can follow.

How long does it take to get the ring?

A ring from the catalogue is made in about two weeks. A custom ring takes 3–6 weeks after the direction is confirmed — form, size, finish, stone. Tracked shipping adds roughly a week on top, worldwide. The date to count back from is the proposal, not the order.

This matters more than it sounds: according to the 2026 Real Weddings Study by The Knot Worldwide, nearly nine in ten proposers ask with a ring already in hand. The ring has to exist on that day. Six weeks before the date is comfortable for custom work; three weeks is enough for a catalogue ring with transit; a week is not enough for either, and it is better to say so before the order than after it.
