Cast in 925 sterling silver at the small size and darkened at the bench by controlled oxidation, the cone arrives dark and stays dark: matte, close to graphite with a blue cast, light caught only on the barbs and along the cut edge. A diagonal opening runs the length of the body, and the crystal sits in it with a long clear tip standing well clear of the cut. Four short barbs stand around the body, two to a side, the brand mark struck along it. The clasp is a separate barbed link in the THORN silhouette: it passes through the lobe and carries the cone on a jump ring.

The stone is a wild-growth tourmaline with no colour at all: a clear prism with a flat facet down one side, reading as glass against the black metal. Eighteen Thorn Amulet earrings exist in the catalogue and this is the only colourless one — the others carry aquamarine, or tourmaline in pink, green, grey and purple. So this is the single piece in the model where the stone is a point of light rather than of colour, and the darkened body leaves nothing to compete with it.

Made this way: the form is modelled in 3D or in wax, a silicone mould taken from it, the silver cast. The master finishes the cone by hand, darkens it, then seats a stone chosen for this body alone.

The oxidized cone holds its tone; the Living Silver cone starts bright and darkens on the wearer over months. On black metal a coloured stone becomes the one accent, while a colourless one becomes a break in the surface — the object stops being solid where the crystal is. Who wears it, and when

This is one earring for one ear, not half of a pair. It suits someone who already wears a single earring and wants the next object dark, with no colour in it — a piece that works against a black collar rather than picking up something else in the outfit. Next to a bright hoop or stud in the other ear, the darkened cone reads as a shadow, not a match. The drop is short: the cone hangs just under the lobe, inside the line of the jaw, clearing a collar rather than catching on it. At 3.5 grams it is among the lightest of the oxidized five: felt on the lobe without pulling at it. The honest limit is the clasp — a hard barbed link, not something to sleep in.
