Thorn Amulet Earring #14 — Grey Tourmaline (M) | STRUGA

A grey tourmaline left uncut, held in the diagonal split of a silver torpedo. One mono earring, 4.9 grams of 925 silver, size M, Rp 3,300,000 (about $185).

At arm's length the crystal reads as a darker part of the metal; only up close does it separate into stone and silver. Three grey tourmalines were built into the Thorn torpedo, and this is the only one left in bare silver. 925 silver, handmade.

The surface is Living Silver: bare 925 with no rhodium plating. It arrives light and darkens on its own from air and skin — a property, not a defect.

An uncut, wild-grown grey tourmaline sits inside the torpedo's diagonal cut, with no prongs and no bezel. The form is an homage to Daniel Arsham.

Earring #14 is sold. The stone grew wild and no two repeat, so this exact piece cannot be remade; we make one close in look, size and finish, with its own pattern and tone, in about two weeks.

Care: a soft cloth or a silver-cleaning solution; work around the stone, and avoid harsh chemicals and ultrasonic baths.

How it is made, and how it is worn

The form is modelled first — in 3D or in wax. A silicone mould is taken from it, the silver is cast, and a master finishes the piece by hand before the stone goes in.

Nothing holds the tourmaline but the silver around it: no prongs, no bezel, no glue. The cut is opened to fit that one crystal — another stone in this grey, with this pattern, does not exist.

It is worn on one ear, on its own. At 4.9 grams the torpedo swings rather than sitting flat against the lobe, and it is the lightest of the medium Thorn Amulets — the blackened ones run 5.4 grams.

How it compares inside the Thorn Amulet line

One form runs through the whole line. What changes between objects is size, weight, surface and price; the silver, the raw stone and the way it sits stay the same.

The surface is the real choice here, not the stone. Two of the three grey tourmalines are darkened at the bench — #20 and #21 carry black oxidation and stay dark from the first day. This one starts light, darkens at its own pace, and can be taken back to the light at any time. What separates the two surfaces is set out in the oxidised silver care guide.

Who it is for, and when

This is a single earring for someone who already wears one ear and wants the object to carry the look on its own. Grey is the quietest stone in the line: it works on a plain day — a shirt, a coat, nothing else on the ear — and it does not pull attention the way the pink and green stones do.

It suits a person who wants the surface to move. Silver that darkens records how often the piece is worn, and after a year the earring does not look the way it looked in the photograph.

The honest limit: this is a solid piece of silver with a raw crystal in it. It is not made to be slept in or worn in the pool, and the surface will not stay factory-light unless it is cleaned. Someone who wants a fixed mirror finish is better served by rhodium-plated silver; someone who wants a fixed dark surface should take the blackened M.
