Men's Silver Rings — Oxidized and Living 925 Silver

The dark film on silver is silver sulfide. The layer is self-limiting: it grows to a certain thickness and stops, sealing the metal underneath. Not corrosion, not wear. Armour.

From there, two paths. Oxidation builds that layer at the bench — the silver arrives already dark. Living Silver runs the other way: it arrives bright and blackens on the hand. STRUGA works both movements, and they are not the same thing.

There are nine rings in the catalogue, and weight follows the size. The run starts at 2.1 g — Signature Links V.2 in size 16 — and tops out at 24.0 g, which is Brutalism V.1 or V.3 in size 22. Taken at size 18, the median across the nine is 7.0 g. One of them is dark from the start.

Short — STRUGA rings

  • Nine rings in the catalogue, all 925 silver with nothing over it: no rhodium, no lacquer
  • Weight 2.1–24.0 g — it follows the size, not the model: 7.0 g median at size 18
  • One ring is darkened at the bench — Brutalism V.3. The other eight arrive bright and darken on the hand
  • There are no rings in the BLADE family right now; THORN has one
  • Made to order in about 2 weeks, shipping about 7 days
  • A ring outside the catalogue — Custom Order and DARK UNION, a 3–6 week frame
  • Price runs $96–$560 and follows the size the same way: all rings

Oxidized silver and living silver are two different movements

The chemistry is the same. 925 silver — 92.5% silver, 7.5% copper — reacts with traces of sulfur in the air and on skin. Silver does not rust; rust belongs to iron. Silver darkens.

Oxidation is a method. The surface is darkened at the bench, then mechanically relieved off the high points: recesses stay flat black, ridges come back to the light. That is what makes relief read at arm's length.

Living Silver is a property. The ring arrives bright, runs the spectrum from straw to graphite, and settles into its tone over the first months. Patina lands unevenly: where finger rubs finger it stays bright, and the recesses collect the black. After a year the ring reads how a person lives with their hands.

Plating stands apart from both. Black rhodium and PVD are a layer over the base: it chips on edges, wears off the knuckle in stripes, and cannot be re-aged on a worn ring without stripping the whole coat first. STRUGA plates nothing. The distinction matters — a finish is how the surface was made, a coating is a layer above the metal.

Nine rings: weight and surface

The table is drawn from the live catalogue: grams and prices across the whole size run, surface from the same finish marker the storefront prints on each piece. Both figures move with the size — the same Brutalism is 9.6 g in size 15 and 24.0 g in size 22.

There are no rings in BLADE right now — that form lives in bracelets, chains, chokers, a pin, an earring and an ear cuff. THORN has one ring, and it is also the whole of the DARK UNION line.

The families the rings come from

BRUTALISM

BRUTALISM — the fourth form of the brand, architecture in silver: an exploration of Soviet brutalist aesthetics under the influence of Suprematism. Broad flat faces, hard chamfers, thick walls. Rings and ear cuffs; the family is young and the range will grow.

THORN

THORN — the third form of the brand, a thorn with sharp angles, where CNC and 3D-modelling meet. THORN pricks the skin a little and will not let you forget it.

SIGNATURE ASYMMETRIC

SIGNATURE ASYMMETRIC — the first form of the brand and the most widely represented. The aesthetic came from CNC-cut sheet material: sharp edges, even planes, recessed depth. The rings of this family are built from links — an open form held by pressure.

SIGNATURE HEART

SIGNATURE HEART — the fifth form, STRUGA's own heart: half smooth, half angular. Heart Lock is the classic beaded-chain clasp, reimagined as SIGNATURE HEART and carried into a ring.

FUSED and EXPERIMENTAL

FUSED — the aesthetic of molten metal: no clear borders, angles or edges, the whole surface wavy and melted. EXPERIMENTAL is a zone of pure creativity, where the familiar things around us are reimagined; Triple Drills came from there.

What mass actually does

Presence on the hand is not about width. A 6 mm band at 3 g feels empty; the same profile at 9.6 g stands on the finger as an object. Ask the weight before the dimensions.

Mass is not a property of the model alone. A wider finger takes a longer band at the same profile, so the metal goes up with the size: the same BRUTALISM is 9.6 g in size 15 and 24.0 g in size 22. Ask for the weight at YOUR size — that is the number you will wear.

The catalogue tops out at 24.0 g. Past that mass a ring starts to interfere with fine motor work — typing, fastening, holding a tool — and the brand's larger mass lives in bracelets and chokers, where the wrist carries it instead of the joint.

Pure silver is too soft for a ring — it dents under fingers. Copper in the alloy raises hardness by roughly an order of magnitude, and that is why a thin 925 band holds its edge for years. Mass gives presence; the alloy is what keeps an edge an edge.

How to choose

The catalogue is not split by gender. Sizes are built to the body — by form, weight and fit, not by a label. What follows is what actually changes the choice.

  • Dark or bright. If you want black from day one, that is Brutalism V.3. If you want the ring to darken by itself and show your hand, take any of the other eight.
  • Mass to the use — read it at your size. Above 10 g a ring is felt all day and wears alone; 5–8 g is the everyday middle; under 4 g stacks and disappears into the hand within a couple of weeks. One model can land in two of those bands: Thorn is 4.7 g in size 16 and 12.7 g in size 22.
  • Size for a heavy ring. Heavy sits differently from thin: it does not ride up the finger and presses harder across the knuckle on warm days. How to measure at home — ring size guidance.
  • Alone or stacked. The SIGNATURE ASYMMETRIC link rings gather with each other and with a thin band. Flat-faced BRUTALISM and the spiked THORN work solo.

How the surface changes on the hand

When What happens to the surface
Months 0–2 The sharpest contrast the ring will ever hold. Living silver is bright metal; the darkened one is flat black in the recesses. The first weeks take the edge off — micro-scratches gather on the polish, skin oils work into the relief.
Months 2–8 The ring settles into its working tone. High points move to a worn mid-grey, recesses keep the dark. The knuckle side brightens first — that is where the contact is.
A year and on Two identical rings on two hands look different: skin chemistry is personal. The surface becomes a map of how the thing is worn.
Years out The metal does not degrade — 925 lasts indefinitely, only the surface shifts. Patina can be reset: silver cleaning liquid takes it off and returns the look of fresh metal. On a matte surface an abrasive does the same — a scotch pad or sandpaper lifts the thin top layer and sets a new matte. It is a move the owner makes with their own hands.

Care

  • Wear it. A drawer is worse for silver than daily contact: on the hand the metal stays steadier.
  • Soap and water. Wash your hands with the ring on, pat it dry. That is the whole routine.
  • No ultrasonic, no tarnish dips. They are built to strip exactly the layer the dark surface is made of.
  • Take it off for chlorine and solvents. Hot tubs are the worst combination — heat plus high chlorine. Saltwater is neutral.

A ring that is not in the catalogue

Two routes, and they are not interchangeable.

Custom Order — the base route for forms outside the catalogue, particular sizes and one-off objects. For a commission STRUGA works with raw wild-growth stones and with Seymchan meteorite.

DARK UNION — the dedicated route for engagement, paired and alternative wedding rings. An alternative take on the engagement and wedding ring: STRUGA steps outside standard design and shows what rings for these rituals can be. It is a dark, oxidized piece into which any wild-growth stone, meteorite, or any other metal can be set. The ready-to-buy line begins with the Thorn ring.

The frame for a commission is 3–6 weeks. It is a frame, not a promised date: the time depends on form, material and workload. Price is built from the budget — weight of metal, type of stone, complexity and size of the form.

Ask a question →
01Which STRUGA rings are dark from the start?+

One — Brutalism V.3, darkened at the bench. The other eight rings in the catalogue are living silver: they arrive bright and darken on the hand. A dark ring outside the catalogue is made to commission — the base route is Custom Order, and for engagement and paired rings, DARK UNION.

02How much do STRUGA rings weigh?+

From 2.1 to 24.0 grams — weight follows the size, so the model alone does not answer it. The lightest point in the catalogue is Signature Links V.2 in size 16, 2.1 g; the heaviest is Brutalism V.1 or V.3 in size 22, 24.0 g — the same Brutalism is 9.6 g in size 15. Taken at size 18, the median across the nine rings is 7.0 g. The full run with weights and prices is in the table above.

03Will oxidized silver rub off on my skin?+

No. The dark layer is silver sulfide — the metal itself, transformed, not a coating on top, and it does not transfer to skin. What you may see inside a brand-new ring is polishing compound, which washes off in the first day. Darkening of the skin under a ring happens with any sterling piece and rinses away.

04Can I shower and swim with it?+

Shower, yes, daily. Occasional pool swimming is fine, though chlorine speeds the surface along. Saltwater is neutral. What to avoid is hot tubs — heat plus high chlorine works hardest of all. Take the ring off for solvents and for cleaning with bleach.

05What is the difference between oxidation and living silver?+

Oxidation is a method: the surface is darkened at the bench, straight away. Living Silver is a property: 925 without rhodium plating arrives bright and darkens by itself, from air and skin. The chemistry is identical — silver sulfide; what differs is when the layer appears. The two are constantly confused, including in our own older texts.

06How does it pair with a wedding band?+

Engagement, paired and alternative wedding rings run on their own route — DARK UNION. Two rings from one form: one is blackened at the bench, the other blackens on the hand and catches up over the years. The frame is 3–6 weeks — a frame, not a promised date.
