Gothic Wedding Rings — Dark Silver Alternative Wedding Bands & Engagement Rings by STRUGA
A diamond solitaire is the default answer, not the only one. Some couples want a ring that looks like them — dark, plain in form, made by hand. That is what the DARK UNION route is for: wedding, engagement and vow rings in 925 sterling silver, built to a brief rather than picked off a tray.
- DARK UNION is STRUGA's wedding and engagement route: the Thorn Ring is ready to buy, the rest is made to a brief.
- All STRUGA rings are 925 sterling silver; no stone is set in the current line.
- Ready shapes take about two weeks; a ring drawn from scratch, three to six.
- Oxidised silver lightens on contact points and can be darkened again on request.
- Men's sizes run 19–22 mm inner diameter: the Thorn Ring is 8,0 g at 19 mm and 12,7 g at 22 mm, Brutalism V.1 and V.3 carry 17,0–24,0 g.
Everything below is what is actually on the bench. Where this page says a ring exists, it links to it; where a thing has to be made for you, it says so instead of showing a picture of it.
What makes a wedding ring dark?
Dark here is a finish and a form, not a colour laid on top. Silver is oxidised — a controlled darkening that sits in the surface rather than on it — so the ring reads black in the recesses and bright where a finger touches it. That contrast is not fixed: contact points lighten with wear, the low relief stays dark, and after a year the ring carries a map of how it has been worn.
The form does the other half. STRUGA rings are drawn from brutalist architecture — heavy sections, flat planes, joins left visible — so a dark band reads as an object rather than as jewellery being quiet about itself. None of this is a diamond substitute in the marketing sense. It is a different premise: a ring you wear every day and still recognise as yours.
DARK UNION: what is ready and what is drawn
DARK UNION works in two modes, and it matters which one you are in. As a line it is ready to buy, and today that means one ring — the Thorn Ring, 4,7–12,7 g of 925 silver depending on size. As a route it is made to a brief: you describe the pair, STRUGA draws it, the ring is made for you. Most wedding enquiries end in the second mode, because a pair has two sizes, two hands and usually one shared detail.
What DARK UNION is not is a rack of stone-set engagement rings. No ring in the current STRUGA line has a stone set in it. The stones the brand works with — raw tourmaline, aquamarine, quartz, and Seymchan meteorite — sit in other families and can be sourced for a made-to-brief piece. Showing them as ready wedding rings would be selling something that is not on the bench.
Rings that work as a pair
A pair does not have to be identical. In practice couples take one of three routes. Same ring, two sizes — the simplest, and the one that ages most evenly. Same family, two weights: Brutalism V.1 runs 9,6–24 g, heavy on a wide hand and still flat on a narrow one. Or two different rings joined by one shared detail — the same finish, the same inner engraving.
That third route is the one worth asking about, because it survives the years when two tastes drift apart. Sizes at STRUGA are taken as inner diameter in millimetres rather than by a national ring scale, so a pair is matched on the actual band and not on a conversion table. Measure both hands at the end of the day, when fingers are at their largest.
Gothic wedding rings for men: what actually changes
STRUGA has no separate men's line, and that is the structure of the catalogue rather than an omission: every ring is made as unisex, and what makes one a men's ring is the top of the size range and the weight that comes with it. Size here is inner diameter in millimetres, and men's hands land in the 19–22 mm range almost every time. At those sizes the same form carries far more metal than at the small end: the Thorn Ring is 8,0 g at 19 mm and 12,7 g at 22 mm; Brutalism V.1 and V.3 run 17,0 g at 19 mm and 24,0 g at 22 mm.
That gives a plain rule for choosing. If you want the gothic reading of a wedding band — heavy, dark, flat-planed — it is Brutalism V.3, the only ring in the line that leaves the bench already dark, 17–24 g in men's sizes. If the weight is not the point but the form is, the Thorn Ring holds sharp facets at 8–12,7 g across the same sizes. Signature Links V.1 is the light end at 4,0–6,0 g — a band that stays out of the way of hands that work.
For a pair this matters more than it looks. A men's and a women's ring in the same form differ by roughly double in weight, and that is normal: the difference is the length of the band, not the shape of it. Nothing else in the order changes — a ready form in your size takes about two weeks, a ring drawn to a brief three to six. The longer read on men's silver bands is in the men's wedding bands piece, and the wider line is in the men's silver rings guide.
The oxidised finish, and how it lives
Oxidation is a chemical darkening of the silver, not a layer added to it. It cannot chip, because nothing is sitting on top to chip off. What it does instead is wear: the outer face of a band — the part that meets pockets and door handles — lightens first, while the inside of every groove stays black. On a ring worn daily that takes months, not years.
One point of honesty about the catalogue: Brutalism V.3 is the only ring STRUGA ships already dark from the bench, 9,6–24 g. Every other ring in the line leaves bright and darkens on its own as it is worn, which is slower and less even. If you want a band dark from day one, say so when you order — it is a finish decision, not a different ring.
Where DARK UNION rings are made
Rings ordered on strugadesign.com are made in Bali by Balinese silversmiths. That is not decoration on the story: Bali has a working silver trade, and the people casting and finishing these rings do it as a job rather than as a revival. STRUGA designs the object and holds the standard; the metal is worked by silversmiths, not by the founders. The production picture in full is on the manufacturing page.
Rings ship worldwide from Bali with tracking, about a week in transit. Made-to-brief work is discussed directly with the designer rather than through a form — you send what you have in mind, you get a drawing back, and you approve it before anything is cast. Photographs come at the wax stage and again after casting, so nothing is a surprise when the box opens.
Ordering a wedding ring to a brief
There is no fixed price list for a made-to-brief ring and STRUGA does not publish one. Cost follows the weight of the metal, the stone if there is one, the complexity of the form and how fast you need it. You say what budget you are working with; a person at STRUGA makes the offer.
The sequence is short. You write with the idea, both ring sizes and the date you are working towards. A direction and a quote come back. Production starts once the drawing is signed off. A ring drawn from scratch takes roughly three to six weeks before it ships; a ready shape in a different size is about two. If you are working to a wedding date, add the week of transit and give yourself a margin on top. Start a brief here.

01Is oxidised silver durable enough for a wedding ring?+–
Yes. Oxidation is a chemical darkening of the silver surface, not a coating, so there is nothing on top to chip or peel. The metal underneath is the same 925 sterling silver used in conventional wedding bands. What changes is the look: contact points lighten with wear while the recesses stay dark. The ring can be darkened again on request.
02Do you make matching pairs?+–
Yes — that is most of what the DARK UNION route does. A pair can be the same ring in two sizes, the same family in two weights, or two different rings sharing one detail such as the finish or an engraving inside. Send both sizes and we make them together so they match.
03Which of your rings are set with stones?+–
None of them, at present. Every ring in the current STRUGA line is 925 sterling silver without a set stone. STRUGA does work with raw stones — most often tourmaline, aquamarine and quartz — and with Seymchan meteorite, and a stone can be sourced for a ring made to a brief. Ask before you plan around it.
04How long does a wedding ring take?+–
A ready shape in your size takes about two weeks to make. A ring drawn from scratch takes roughly three to six weeks after the drawing is signed off. Transit is about a week on top of that, worldwide, with tracking.
05What does a made-to-brief ring cost?+–
There is no published price for it. The cost follows the weight of the metal, the stone if there is one, the complexity of the form and the deadline. You tell us the budget you are working with, and a person at STRUGA makes the offer — not a calculator.
