What makes a men's wedding band genuinely unique in 2026?
Three axes separate a band from the cookie-cutter market: material, finish and story. None of them is about the day of the ceremony. All three are about the next forty years.
- Material honesty. Most rings sold as "alternative" are tungsten carbide or titanium with a coating layered on top. A genuinely dark band carries its colour in the alloy itself, or in a controlled oxidation that reaches into the metal.

Why does a black PVD coating not reach the silver anniversary?
PVD — physical vapour deposition — lays down a layer two to five microns thick. On day one it is dense, scratch-resistant and indistinguishable from genuinely blackened metal. Time shows the difference.
Manufacturer warranties typically say seven to ten years. Real loss at the contact points begins in year three to five. When the layer goes, the bare silver-grey metal shows through as a band on the palm side rather than evenly — which reads worse than uniform darkening.
White gold works the same way. It is rhodium-plated to reach the cool tone the buyer assumes is the metal's own colour; the rhodium wears off in two to four years and needs renewal. A coated band occupies the worst position on the market: high entry price, a finite cosmetic life, and no route to repair.
Is there an honest black besides oxidised silver?
There is, and it deserves to be named. Black zirconium is not coated but heated: an oxide layer grows on the surface and becomes part of the metal itself. Patent descriptions of the process put that layer at one to ten microns, most often three to seven; roughly three hours at 1100 °F yields four to five microns.
The mechanism differs from PVD — the oxide grew out, it was not laid on. The arithmetic of thickness still applies. Microns are microns: the layer scratches, restoring it means re-oxidising at the maker, and a zirconium ring, like titanium and tungsten, is not resized by ordinary jeweller's means.
Silver 925 follows a different logic. Patina settles unevenly: where finger rubs finger the surface lightens, in the recesses the black collects. It can be stripped and rebuilt on the same bench where the ring is soldered and stretched. Five minutes a year.

The six metals of this market are not equivalent — each has its own weight on the hand, lifespan and route to repair. The choice between them is larger than width, finish or price band.
- Sterling silver 925 — 92.5% silver with 7.5% copper, density 10.36 g/cm³, Mohs 2.5–3. The proportion is not decorative: pure silver dents under fingers, and seven and a half percent of copper raises hardness almost sixfold.
- 18-karat yellow gold — 75% gold, density 15.58 g/cm³, Mohs 2.5. White gold of the same karat is rhodium-plated, and that plating wears off in 2–4 years.
- Platinum 950 — 95% pure with iridium or ruthenium, density 21.45 g/cm³: nearly twice the heft of silver in the same volume.
- Titanium grade 4 (ASTM B348) — density 4.51 g/cm³, around 200 HV; light and corrosion-resistant, but it will not solder under a standard jeweller's torch.
- Tungsten carbide — 8.5 to 9 on Mohs: effectively unscratchable in wear, yet brittle enough that a sharp impact at the wrong angle fractures the band cleanly through.
