The Thorn Amulet Earring #19 is a single 925 sterling silver earring by STRUGA, 5.4 grams, size M, holding a raw green tourmaline. How it is made, and how the black is made
The form is modelled first — in 3D or by hand in wax. A silicone mould is taken from that model and the silver is cast into it. A silversmith finishes the piece by hand and sets the stone inside, which is why every one is singular.
The darkening comes last. The surface is taken to depth in a controlled bath and stopped where the piece asks for it. What grows there is silver sulphide, not an oxide: silver answers to sulphur and mostly ignores oxygen. The reaction is self-limiting — only the top few layers turn, and that layer then seals the metal beneath it. Nothing is laid on top, so there is no coating to peel.
How it differs from the other green tourmalines
Four Thorn Amulet earrings hold green tourmaline, and they divide on two things only: size and surface. The stone colour is common to all four. What you choose here is the finish.

#19 and #6 are the same size, the same weight and the same price. The only difference is where the darkness comes from. On #19 it is set in advance, and the relief reads dark from the first day. On #6 the silver arrives bright and darkens later, on the wearer. Living Silver is a property of uncoated 925; oxidation is a move made at the bench. Does the black wear off, and how do I care for it?
It lightens unevenly, and that is the point of it. Oxidation is the surface of the silver itself, not a coating, so there is no layer to peel: friction brightens the raised planes while the recesses stay dark. Do not use a dip, a polishing cloth or an ultrasonic bath — all three strip the dark layer the drawing lives on. Wash in warm water with a drop of mild soap and a soft brush, dry it properly, and take it off before a shower or a pool. The finish can be taken back to depth at the bench at any point.
