A material that improves with time

925 silver is one of the few materials that genuinely gets better from use. Unlike a t-shirt that wears out or a ceramic that chips, a silver ring or bracelet develops patina — a surface evolution driven by your skin chemistry, the climate you live in, and the way you move. Two identical rings worn by two different people for a year will look completely different. The silver absorbs your life.

The number behind all of this is 92.5. Sterling is 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper, and that 7.5% is what makes a ring hard enough to wear every day. Pure silver at 99.9% is too soft to hold a form. The alloy is also what lets the surface darken: copper reacts, silver alone barely would.

How old is silver work on Bali, really?

Bali was casting metal long before it was selling jewelry. The Moon of Pejeng is the largest single-cast bronze kettledrum in the world: 186.6 centimetres tall, with a tympanum 160 centimetres across. It dates to roughly 300 BC and still stands in the temple at Pejeng, near Ubud.

Is the thousand-year claim true?

Sellers on the island routinely date Balinese silver to the 9th century, when Hindu-Javanese metalworking is said to have arrived. That date rests on trade lore rather than on documents, and it is worth knowing which part is firm. The documentary record for silver itself begins in the 16th century, when smiths in Gianyar regency worked for the courts of the Klungkung dynasty.

Neither version makes the craft young. Four centuries of continuous court and village work is a longer unbroken line than almost any European workshop can show. It is simply a claim you can check.

What the concentration of smiths means for a buyer

The part travellers underestimate is density, not age. In a single family courtyard, grandparents, parents and children work the same metal. Each generation adds refinements to a technique it received rather than invented, which is why hand-finishing standards on the island are consistent across workshops that never compare notes.

Value that holds

925 silver is a precious metal. Unlike plated jewelry that reveals a cheap alloy when the coating wears off, solid 925 is the same material from surface to core. It has its own value that does not vanish with time. And a markup for handwork from a respected workshop adds collectible value on top.

A well-made Bali silver ring costs a fraction of comparable craft in Europe, Japan or North America. The metal costs the same everywhere — silver trades on a world price. Labour and overhead on the island are lower, so the same budget buys more hours of handwork here.

Two things follow from that spread. A first Bali piece does not need a four-figure budget, and the expensive end is expensive because of stones and hours, not because of a name.

How do you check a silver piece before you pay?

Four checks separate a piece worth keeping from market filler. All four take under a minute at the counter, and they work the same in a concept store and at a stall.
