How it is made, and how it is worn

The form is modelled first — in 3D or by hand in wax. A silicone mould is taken from the model, silver is cast into it, and a silversmith finishes the piece by hand. The stone comes last: it is seated in the open cut, so the silver closes around the shape the crystal already had.

The earring is worn singly, in one ear — a mono format. At 5.9 grams it is the heaviest earring of the model, and the lobe registers the weight; the crystal carries the line further down, towards the jaw. Around it sit the other objects of the AMULET family, each built around its own raw stone.

Which Thorn Amulet to choose

The Thorn form is the same across the model. What changes is how much silver sits in the ear, and which stone grew inside the cut.

Thorn and Classic are the two flagship models of the AMULET family. Thorn states itself; Classic keeps the same raw stone inside a restrained cylinder. At size L the two cost the same and weigh within half a gram of each other, so the choice between them is form, not price.

Who it is for, and when it is worn

Size L is the step for someone who wants the object read across a room rather than found up close. The split of the torpedo is legible at distance, and the crystal adds length below the silver, so the earring works against a bare neck and an open collar. It is worn in one ear, alone. Against a row of studs on the other side it becomes the anchor of the pair.

The aquamarine here is uncut and grew wild, so it is almost colourless in one plane and turns faintly green in the next, with growth lines running the length of the crystal. It was chosen for that, not despite it. An amulet is an object that carries personal meaning for the one who wears it; STRUGA promises no effect from the stone.

Where it does not work: sleeping in it. The sharp planes press into the ear under a pillow, and at 5.9 grams the earring is better left on the table at night.
