Men's Silver Necklaces: Chains, Pendants & How to Choose

Two decisions settle almost every silver piece a man wears on the neck: whether the object hangs from the chain or the chain is the object, and how far down the chest it lands. Everything else — link pattern, weight, finish — follows from those two. This guide answers both from our own bench numbers rather than from generic sizing charts.

At 50 cm a chain shows in an open collar; 75 cm for a pendant that needs room to hang. 925 sterling is 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper; the hallmark and visible handwork are the two checks that mean something, and weight is not one of them. Chain or pendant — which one should you buy?

Buy the chain when you want the silver present and unread; buy the pendant when you want something to be looked at. That is the whole decision, and it is not about decoration.

A plain chain carries no focal point, so the eye passes over it. Link pattern and weight do all the work: a fine round link disappears under a shirt, a wide flat link holds presence on a bare chest. It survives every context — office, gym, evening — because there is nothing in it to explain.

A pendant puts one object at the centre and asks for space around it. It needs a longer chain, a simpler chain, and a wearer willing to be asked about it. On a man the pendant works when it has clear mass and one readable shape rather than several competing details.

• Want it unnoticed — a bare chain, 40 to 50 cm, 11 to 18 g.
• Want it seen — one pendant on a 75 cm chain, 6 to 40 g.
• Want both — a 120 cm chain doubled short or worn long, 35 g.

What length should a men's silver necklace be?

Length is the single measurement that changes the piece most, and it is measured on the neck, not on the chest. Our own chains are made in five lengths, and each one lands somewhere specific.

Does neck size change the length you need?

Neck circumference shifts all of it: the same 50 cm chain crosses the collarbones on a 38 cm neck and closes like a choker on a 43 cm one. A pendant also subtracts from the drop — a 4 cm object on a 55 cm chain lands where a bare 59 cm chain would.

How much does a men's silver chain weigh?

Weight is what a chain feels like after four hours, and nobody publishes it. Ours, from the catalogue, with prices as listed:

What does each weight band feel like?

The useful reading: below 10 grams a piece is felt only when it moves, between 11 and 18 grams it stays present all day without pulling, and past 30 grams the neck knows it is there. Length and weight are not proportional — the 120 cm chain holds 35 g, two grams more than a 50 cm choker of the same links across two and a half times the length.

Which link pattern suits a man's chain?

Link pattern decides how a chain moves and how loud it reads before anyone notices the metal. Four families cover almost everything sold to men.

• Cable and rolo — round links at right angles. The quietest option, and the usual carrier for a pendant, because it stays out of the way.
• Curb and figaro — flattened, twisted links that lie against the skin. Reads wider than its weight and is the standard men's chain worldwide.
• Box and byzantine — dense, squared construction. Heavy for its length, and the pattern itself becomes the ornament.
• Designed links — a form repeated into a chain rather than a stock pattern. STRUGA's Thorn and Blade chains work this way.

Which patterns survive a break?

Pattern also decides repairability: the finer the link, the more likely a single failure ends the chain. Heavier flat links can be opened and closed again by a silversmith.

Why 925 sterling and not another fineness?

Pure silver is too soft for a chain — links deform and the clasp wears open. 925 sterling is 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper, the alloy that has carried jewellery for more than eight centuries, and the 925 hallmark is the formal statement of that content.

Two checks are worth making. The hallmark, which is a legal mark rather than a marketing one — the Assay Office London lists 925 among the recognised silver finenesses alongside 800 and 999. And visible handwork — slight asymmetry between repeated elements, hand-finished surfaces, a clasp that was fitted rather than dropped in.

Why is weight not a test of quality?

Weight is not a check. A 40-gram pendant can be cast hollow, and a 7-gram one can be solid; the number alone tells you nothing about either silver content or construction.

Dark silver — oxidised finish or patina?

Dark silver comes from two different places, and the trade uses one word for both. Oxidising is a bench process: the piece is darkened deliberately before it is sold, and it arrives dark. Patina is a property: uncoated silver arrives light and darkens on the wearer, recesses deepening while friction keeps the raised edges bright.

Most silver on the market avoids both by being rhodium-plated, which locks the surface bright and stops the metal changing at all. STRUGA leaves the metal uncoated and calls the resulting change Living Silver — the piece darkens with its owner rather than at the bench.

How many STRUGA pieces are actually blackened?

The distinction is checkable in our own catalogue rather than asserted. Counted across all 37 STRUGA pieces worn on the neck, on 29 August 2026:

So a dark STRUGA chain is usually a chain that got dark, not one that was sold dark — two of thirty-seven were blackened at the bench.

How do you wear and care for it?

Let one piece lead. A single chain or a single pendant worn deliberately reads better than three competing objects, and metals should agree — silver with silver if you already wear a ring or a bracelet.

A chain under an open collar stays understated. A pendant over a plain t-shirt or on a bare chest is given the room it needs. Uncoated silver settles naturally into a muted wardrobe, where polished metal reads as dressed-up.

How do you clean uncoated silver?

Care is short, and four habits cover it:

• Wipe with a soft cloth after wear — most darkening is skin oil, not the metal.
• Brighten uncoated silver with a polishing cloth on the raised surfaces only.
• Leave the recesses dark — they are what holds the form readable.
• Remove it before pools and the sea: chlorine and salt attack the alloy, not the silver.
