Sterling Silver Earrings — Oxidized 925 Amulets and Ear Cuffs by STRUGA

An earring is the piece that sits closest to the face, and a dark one has to earn that position. This page is about the earrings STRUGA sends out already blackened — what they are, how many of them exist, and why almost every other earring in the catalogue arrives light instead.

The word «oxidized» does two jobs in jewellery writing, and mixing them is how a reader ends up expecting the wrong object. One is a technique applied at the bench before the piece ships. The other is what uncoated sterling silver does on its own, on the ear, over months. STRUGA does both, and the difference decides which piece you should be looking at.

The catalogue holds 70 earrings and ear cuffs. 14 of them leave the bench already blackened; the other 56 leave light.

Of those 14, thirteen are amulets — every one built around a raw tourmaline — and the fourteenth is a Brutalism V.3 ear cuff with no stone at all.

Blackened pieces weigh 1.6 to 7.0 g and price $125–$217. Across all 70 earrings the span is 0.3 to 8.0 g and $58–$280.

No rhodium, no lacquer seal. The light pieces darken by themselves — that is the Living Silver finish, and it is a property, not a treatment.

Oxidation is a technique; Living Silver is what the metal does

Blackened silver is not painted. It is the same 925 alloy, chemically darkened at the surface so the metal reads graphite instead of white, then cut back on the highlights so edges come forward. The tone is there on day one, and if it wears off it can be laid on again.

Living Silver is the opposite arrangement. The piece leaves the bench light and uncoated; air, skin and wear darken it, recesses first. Nobody applies anything. The surface keeps moving for as long as the piece is worn, and two people wearing the same model end up with different objects.

Both routes end somewhere dark. They do not start in the same place, and a page that calls them by one name is telling you the tone will arrive when it will not. On an ear the distinction is practical: a blackened piece is dark at the first wearing, a light one takes weeks.

Which STRUGA earrings are actually blackened

Fourteen, counted across the live catalogue: thirteen earrings and one ear cuff. They do not spread across the design families — thirteen of the fourteen sit inside the AMULET family, and every one of those thirteen carries a raw tourmaline.

That last row matters more than it looks. The thirteen amulets are one of one: each is built around a single raw crystal that cannot be sourced twice, so every amulet card stands at zero stock and stays as an archive record after it sells. The Brutalism cuff is an ordinary catalogue object — the same form is made again.

What the other 56 ear pieces are

Fifty-one of them are plain uncoated 925: light on arrival, darkening on the ear. That is where BLADE, SIGNATURE ASYMMETRIC, SIGNATURE HEART and most of the BRUTALISM ear pieces live. If you want one of those forms dark, the darkness comes from wearing it, not from the bench.

The last five are worth naming separately: they are not blackened silver at all. Carbon fibre is the counterweight to silver — it does not darken, does not patina and does not move. Dark on arrival, dark in ten years.

So the map of a dark STRUGA ear is short. Want it dark today — the fourteen above. Want the form, and willing to let it arrive light — the whole range is open, and it will get there.

Why no rhodium and no lacquer seal

Most commercial silver earrings are rhodium-plated. The plating is white and hard, it hides the metal underneath, and it fails: once it thins, the piece looks worse than honest silver ever does, and there is nothing to age into. Lacquer is the same bargain over a shorter term — on something that meets hair, pillows and sweaters every day, a sealed coat scratches off in weeks.

STRUGA uses neither. What sits under the fingers is metal. On a blackened piece that means the tone can be renewed at the bench instead of being stripped and replaced. On a light piece it means the surface is allowed to move: near-charcoal in the recesses within months, brighter at the points that touch things most.

The finishing is hand work, done by the silversmiths of the Bali workshop. That is where the small differences come from: patina depth is hand-controlled rather than machine-uniform, so two pieces of the same model read in the same register without being identical.

How earrings age on the ear

Ear pieces change faster than rings or pendants for one reason: hair. Hair is mildly abrasive and it is in constant contact, so after two or three weeks of regular wear the outer face of a stud, the back of a curve, the top edge of a drop start brightening while the recesses hold their dark.

You can steer it. A soft cloth after wear slows the shift, and it is worth using if hairspray or leave-in conditioner is part of the routine — both accelerate uneven patina. A polishing cloth on the high points pushes the other way and builds the contrast faster.

What you cannot do is take a piece back to the day it was made. It ages forward. On a blackened amulet the workshop can re-oxidize and re-cut the highlights, which is close — but the metal underneath has already lived, and that shows.

How to choose: weight, post, cuff fit

Ears have stricter physical limits than any other place a piece is worn, and three numbers carry most of the decision.

• Weight. Across the catalogue ear pieces run 0.3 to 8.0 g. The blackened fourteen sit between 1.6 and 7.0 g, and nine of them are under 4 g. If heavy earrings have tired you before, stay under 4 g — the exact weight is on every product card.
• Post. Posts are solid 925, not plated brass; plated posts are the usual cause of a reaction that gets blamed on «silver». Friction backs come as standard, and a screw-back is available through Custom Order.
• Cuff fit. A no-piercing cuff has to grip the upper ear edge — loose and it travels, tight and it aches. Cuffs ship at an average tension and the silver is soft enough to open or close the gap by half a millimetre between thumb and finger. For an ear that sits outside average, a tracing through Custom Order gets it calibrated.

Care

Ear pieces need less active care than rings, which meet soap and impact daily, and more than a necklace sitting static on a chest.

• Wipe with soft cotton after wear, especially after hairspray, perfume or sunscreen.
• Store closed — a box or pouch. Open air darkens the whole surface evenly, which flattens the contrast instead of building it.
• Shower yes, swim no. Chlorine and salt attack the tone, and chlorine can dull a blackened piece in a single swim.
• Never an ultrasonic cleaner and never a silver dip: both strip intentional oxidation off the whole surface in seconds.
• A polishing cloth on the high points only. Scratched past living with — send it back for refinishing.

Stones in these earrings

Every blackened earring in the catalogue holds a raw tourmaline, and nothing else. The crystals are uncut — the natural growth face is kept, not faceted — so they read as artifacts rather than gems. Green, pink, grey and one colourless prism run through the thirteen; against a blackened surface the pale ones carry, and the dark ones sink into the metal.

Tourmaline sits at 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale, which is why an uncut crystal survives daily wear on an ear. Ears are also a protected zone: a raw tip that would chip against a countertop on a ring goes years untouched on a lobe. Aquamarine and quartz appear elsewhere in the AMULET family, on the light pieces. For a stone outside the range, the route is Custom Order.
