Proposing in Bali: The Ultimate Guide to Alternative Engagement Rings

An engagement ring can be made on Bali itself, in the weeks before you propose. A silver ring from the STRUGA catalogue costs Rp 2,148,000 to 18,051,000 (about $121 to $1,013), because the price follows the weight of the metal and climbs with ring size. Plain silver takes two weeks to make and silver with a stone takes three, so a shorter trip ends with the ring shipped home instead. Anything worth more than US$500 is declared on arrival in Indonesia.

Bali has become one of the world's most sought-after wedding destinations, and the reasons are easy to see: volcanic sunsets, temple ceremonies, jungle villas, a culture that treats celebration as sacred work. What almost nobody plans for is the ring itself. Proposal planners will build you a cliff-top setup with flowers and a photographer, and then leave the one object that outlives the day to a duty-free counter at the airport.

The island can do better than that. Bali has made silver for generations, and a ring ordered here is made while you are still on it.

What alternative engagement ring ideas work without a diamond?

An alternative engagement ring is any ring that does the same job without the solitaire diamond. Seven ideas below work in 925 silver. In the Brutalism V.3 line they run from Rp 6,558,000 to Rp 16,395,000 (about $368 to $920) depending on size, and each one fits inside a normal three-week stay: plain silver takes about 2 weeks at the bench, a stone setting about 3.

  • A signet instead of a stone. The flat top carries an initial, a date or a seal, and the ring reads as an object rather than a setting.
  • A wide textured band. Cast surface and hard facets do the work a stone would do: in Brutalism V.3 that is 10 to 24 grams of silver depending on size.
  • Blackened silver instead of white metal. Darkened at the bench, it keeps the shape and drops the shine.
  • A raw, uncut stone. Natural crystal faces mean no two rings match, and the price does not follow a certificate.
  • A pair drawn as one object. Engagement ring and wedding band from the same drawing, not two rings that met by accident.
  • Propose with the stone alone. You carry the gem, not the ring, and the setting is chosen together afterwards.
  • A placeholder ring. A plain silver band for the proposal itself, with the real ring made later, without a departure date hanging over it.

The last two ideas exist for one reason: a ring made to size wants the hand it is made for. If you want both the surprise and the fit, split them — propose with something simple, then size and finish the real ring together.

How much does an alternative engagement ring cost on Bali?

A silver ring from the STRUGA catalogue costs between Rp 2,148,000 and Rp 18,051,000, or roughly $121 to $1,013. The spread is not a marketing ladder. Silver is sold by weight, so a ring in a larger size contains more metal and costs more, and the same model can double in price between the smallest and the largest size on the shelf.

The figures below are one ring, Brutalism V.3, across its full size run. They are the clearest illustration of how silver pricing actually behaves.

Ring size Silver weight Price
15–16 10 g Rp 6,558,000–6,832,000 (~$368–383)
17 12 g Rp 8,454,000 (~$474)
18 14 g Rp 9,563,000 (~$537)
19 17 g Rp 11,653,000 (~$654)
20 19 g Rp 12,979,000 (~$728)
21 22 g Rp 15,024,000 (~$843)
22 24 g Rp 16,395,000 (~$920)

This matters for couples buying two rings at once. A pair in sizes 16 and 21 is not two identical prices; the larger ring carries twice the silver. Lighter models exist for exactly this reason: Signature Links V.1 runs 3 to 6 grams and starts at Rp 2,171,000, while Fused Cross sits in the middle at 4 to 9 grams. Dollar figures here are approximate; the shop charges in rupiah.

Why have the ring made on Bali instead of buying one at home?

Bali is not only a backdrop; it is a place where handwork is part of ordinary life. The island's silver district, centred on Celuk village east of Ubud, has produced master silversmiths for generations, and the workshops there still cast, file and finish by hand. A ring made here is not pulled from a glass case. It is made for you, on the island your story now runs through.

There is a practical side too. Silver rings on Bali are priced by the gram, not by a brand markup, and the same money buys far more object. What you trade for that is time: the ring has to be made, and making takes weeks, not hours.

Will the ring be finished before your flight home?

Plain silver takes about 2 weeks to make, silver set with a stone about 3, and carbon 4. Most Bali trips are shorter than that. This single fact decides more proposals than any design question, and almost no guide states it plainly.

What you order Time to make
Plain silver ~2 weeks
Silver with a stone ~3 weeks
Carbon ~4 weeks, always an individual order
Full custom design, outside the catalogue 3–6 weeks

There are three honest ways through this:

  • Order before you fly. The making runs while you are booking flights, and the ring is waiting when you land.
  • Take a catalogue piece. It already exists, so it needs no making time at all.
  • Order on the island and ship it home. Propose with something else, and the finished ring follows you with tracking.

None of these is a compromise. The only real mistake is walking into a workshop four days before departure and expecting metal to move faster than it does.

Silver, gold or platinum: which metal holds up as an engagement ring?

Silver is the cheapest of the three by a wide margin, and the only one that visibly changes with wear. Gold and platinum hold their colour; silver darkens, catches shadow in every recess, and ends up looking like the hand that wore it. Whether that is a flaw or the entire point is the actual question, and it is a matter of taste rather than quality.

925 silver Gold Platinum
Surface over time Darkens, takes patina Holds its colour Holds colour, scratches soften into matte
Weight on the hand Light Heavier Heaviest
Resizing Straightforward for a jeweller Straightforward Harder, costs more
Price for the same form Lowest Higher Highest
Suits People who want the object to record wear People who want it unchanged People who want it unchanged and heavy

If the darkening is what draws you, read the wider case for alternative engagement rings before you choose a form.

What should you look for in an alternative ring?

The term covers a wide spectrum, from a plain silver band to a raw crystal in a heavy setting. Three decisions narrow it quickly.

Material

Sterling silver is the signature of the dark alternative aesthetic. It ages, costs a fraction of gold or platinum, and carries a depth that bright metals do not. Two finishes exist and they are not the same thing: silver left uncoated darkens on its own from contact with skin and air, while blackened silver has been darkened at the bench before it reaches you. For more edge, look for silver paired with carbon or meteorite.

Stone

Move past the clear diamond.

  • Black spinel — deep, opaque black; Mohs 7.5–8, harder than onyx.
  • Smoky quartz — grey-brown transparency, like looking into smoke; Mohs 7.
  • Raw tourmaline — uncut crystal faces, so no two are alike; Mohs 7.
  • Black onyx — the classic matte or polished black; it is chalcedony, the compact form of quartz, so Mohs 7.
  • Aquamarine — pale blue-green, unexpected against a dark setting; it is beryl, Mohs 7.5–8.

Mohs hardness is resistance to scratching, and on a ring worn every day it matters more than colour: anything below 7 dulls faster. Figures from the Handbook of Mineralogy, Mineralogical Society of America — spinel, quartz, tourmaline, beryl.

Note that stone-set rings are an individual order rather than a catalogue piece, which is why they take a week longer to make.

Design

Alternative does not mean careless. Alternative engagement rings that hold up show real craft in service of an unconventional idea: clean geometry, deliberate texture, considered proportion. A good dark ring is not anti-jewellery. It has rejected one set of conventions and accepted a plainer one.

How do you order a custom ring on Bali, step by step?

The process is simpler than it looks, especially with an established brand rather than a workshop you found on a scooter ride.

Step 1: Share the idea

Send your references. Screenshots, saved posts, rough sketches, a photo of a ring she already wears — all of it helps more than adjectives do. State the budget, the metal, the stone if any, the size if you know it, and any engraving. Most Bali jewellers work in English.

Step 2: Design and quote

A serious jeweller answers with sketches or renders, a material specification, a timeline and a price. Ask what the ring will weigh: on silver, weight is the price, and a jeweller who cannot tell you the gram figure has not designed the ring yet.

Step 3: Making

Two weeks for plain silver, three with a stone, four for carbon. Progress photos during the making are a good sign; a workshop confident in its bench does not mind being watched.

Step 4: Handover

If you are on the island, collect the ring in person and make the handover part of the story. If you have already flown home, the ring ships worldwide with tracking, usually 7 to 14 business days.

Do you have to declare an engagement ring at customs?

Bringing a ring into Indonesia is duty free up to US$500 in customs value per passenger per arrival; above that it is declared and taxed. The rule is PMK 34/2025, in force since 6 June 2025, which sets import duty at 10% on the excess plus VAT, and it applies to the ring in your pocket exactly as it applies to a new laptop.

Taking a ring out is governed by the country you fly home to, not by Indonesia. Two common thresholds:

Route Threshold Note
Into Indonesia US$500 per passenger 10% duty on the excess (PMK 34/2025)
Home to the United States $800 personal exemption Once every 31 days, after at least 48 hours abroad
Home to Australia A$900 general goods Above it, duty applies to the whole amount, not just the excess

A ring you order and have shipped is treated as an imported parcel by your own customs service, not as a personal allowance, and is cleared under that country's parcel rules. Sources: PMK 34/2025 as reported by DDTC News, U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Australian Border Force. Check your own border service before you fly; thresholds move.

Where on Bali should you actually propose?

If the ring is going to be unconventional, the setting may as well match it. Four places that suit a dark object better than a resort dinner does:

  • Sunrise at Mount Batur. Climb the active volcano in the dark and propose as the sun comes up over the caldera. Cold, steep, and worth it.
  • A temple blessing. Some Balinese temples hold blessing ceremonies for couples. Proposing either side of an old ritual gives the moment a frame that a restaurant cannot.
  • Black sand in the east. The beaches around Amed and Tulamben are volcanic grey-black and empty at first light, with Mount Agung standing behind you. Dark stone, dark water, a dark ring — the setting says what the object says.
  • A hidden waterfall. Tibumana, Tukad Cepung and Sekumpul sit deep enough in the jungle that you will have them nearly to yourselves early in the day.

How does STRUGA make its engagement rings?

STRUGA works in dark minimalist silver, handmade in Bali by master silversmiths. Engagement rings here are made in 925 sterling silver; the surface is either left uncoated, so it darkens on the hand over months, or blackened at the bench for a finish that arrives dark. We take full custom engagement and wedding commissions, from the first sketch to the finished object, and we quote the weight before we quote the price.

Start on the Custom Orders page, or look through the ring collection for pieces already drawn and ready to be made. The Dark Wedding page covers our approach to wedding jewellery, and the Island Artifacts collection holds the pieces most tied to Bali itself.

One last thing worth saying out loud. A ring made on this island will not stay the way it looked in the photograph — it will go dark in the recesses, catch light on the high edges, and end up a slightly different object than the one you handed over. That is the whole argument for silver, and it is the closest a piece of metal comes to keeping a record.

About STRUGA. STRUGA is a dark silver jewelry brand founded by Dmitry Strugovshchikov and Ekaterina Strugovshchikova, handcrafted with Balinese and international silversmiths. The silver line is 925 sterling silver; the CARBON family is cut from the brand's own layered carbon, with other materials set into it. Uncoated pieces darken with wear; blackened pieces are darkened at the bench. It is a brutalist object that reacts and changes through contact with the environment and the wearer.

Ask a question →
01How long before my Bali trip should I order an engagement ring?+–

Order at least three weeks ahead if you want a made-to-order ring waiting when you land. Plain silver takes about two weeks to make, silver with a stone about three, and carbon four. A catalogue piece needs no making time and can be collected or shipped straight away.

02Do I have to declare an engagement ring when I fly into Bali?+–

Yes, if it is worth more than US$500. Indonesia exempts personal goods up to US$500 in customs value per passenger per arrival under PMK 34/2025, in force since 6 June 2025; above that a 10% import duty applies to the excess, plus VAT. Declaration is filed digitally before landing.

03Is silver jewellery from Bali actually good quality?+–

The silver district around Celuk has worked the metal for generations and the bench skill is real. What varies is the alloy: ask for 925 sterling in writing, ask for the gram weight of the finished ring, and treat any workshop that will not give you both as a tourist stall rather than a jeweller.

04Why does the same ring cost more in a larger size?+–

Because silver is priced by weight. Brutalism V.3 weighs 10 grams in size 15 and 24 grams in size 22, and the price moves with the metal: Rp 6,558,000 against Rp 16,395,000. A couple buying two rings should expect the larger one to cost noticeably more.

05Is an alternative engagement ring just a cheap engagement ring?+–

No. An alternative ring rejects the clear-diamond convention, not the craftsmanship. Strong examples show clean geometry, deliberate texture and considered proportion; silver simply costs a fraction of gold or platinum for the same form.

06Is a darkened silver ring the same as silver that has tarnished?+–

No. On these rings the darkness is intended. Uncoated silver darkens through contact with skin and air over months of wear, and blackened silver is darkened deliberately at the bench before it ships. Neither is damage, and both can be polished back if you change your mind.
