Green tourmaline — verdelite — takes its colour from iron. In 1703, Dutch East India Company merchants brought the first Ceylonese tourmalines to Amsterdam and noticed that a warmed stone first pulled ash from hot coals towards itself and then pushed it away. They named it aschentrekker — "ash puller" — and the scientists who took up the stone called it the Ceylonese magnet. The rough crystal keeps the longitudinal striations of its trigonal prism; a cut stone erases that fingerprint. 925 silver, handmade.
