Oxidized Silver Care: How to Maintain Dark Jewelry

Understanding Oxidized Silver

Oxidized silver is sterling silver that has been intentionally darkened through a chemical process. This creates the dark, dramatic look that defines STRUGA's aesthetic. But how do you care for it without losing that darkness?

Daily Wear: Yes, You Can

925 sterling silver — oxidized or not — is made for daily wear. The oxidation is in the surface layer. Normal contact with skin, water, and air won't damage it. In fact, daily wear helps maintain the patina.

What to Avoid

Polishing cloths: Standard silver polishing cloths will remove the oxidation. That's their job. Don't use them on oxidized pieces unless you want to lighten them.

Chemical cleaners: Silver dip solutions strip oxidation instantly. Never use them on dark jewelry.

Chlorine and salt water: Swimming pools and the ocean can affect silver. Remove jewelry before swimming.

How to Clean Oxidized Silver

Warm water + mild soap + a soft cloth. That's it. Gently wipe the piece, rinse, and dry with a soft cloth. For textured surfaces, use a soft-bristle toothbrush.

Storage

Keep pieces in a dry place. Individual pouches or compartments prevent scratching. Anti-tarnish strips in your jewelry box help slow oxidation changes.
