Oxidized Silver — What It Is, Why It Matters, How It Ages

The Chemistry of Darkness

Oxidized silver is not damaged silver. It's silver that has been intentionally darkened through a controlled chemical reaction — typically using liver of sulfur (potassium polysulfide) or other sulfur compounds. The result is a thin layer of silver sulfide on the surface, which appears dark grey to near-black.

Why Oxidize Silver?

Oxidation serves three purposes in jewelry design:

  1. Contrast: Dark recesses make raised surfaces appear brighter, enhancing three-dimensional detail
  2. Depth: Oxidation creates visual depth that bright silver cannot achieve
  3. Aesthetic: Dark silver belongs to a different visual vocabulary — industrial, gothic, architectural

How STRUGA Uses Oxidation

STRUGA employs two approaches to dark silver:

Living Silver (Natural Patina)

No intentional treatment. The silver darkens naturally through contact with air, skin, and moisture. Each piece develops its own unique patina pattern based on how it's worn. This is STRUGA's default finish.

Blackened (Intentional Oxidation)

Applied in the workshop using traditional patination techniques. The artisan selectively removes darkening from raised surfaces, creating deliberate contrast. This finish is more dramatic and immediate than Living Silver.

How Oxidized Silver Ages

Over time, the oxidation layer interacts with your skin, creating a dynamic surface:

  • Contact points brighten — where your skin touches the silver regularly
  • Recesses stay dark — protected from wear
  • The pattern is unique to you — your ring will look different from anyone else's

Care for Oxidized Silver

  • Gentle cleaning only — aggressive polishing removes the oxidation
  • No silver dip solutions — they strip all darkening
  • If the darkness fades, it can be re-applied by any jeweler with liver of sulfur
